5 Watches to buy and sell in a cooling aftermarket
Overheated secondary markets for new and used watches have been declining sharply these days. Yet, it doesn’t mean branded watches can now be bought at discount prices, but it has created different trading conditions for collectors and investors.
In a cooling market, the obvious risk is that asset values will fall in the short term. Therefore, buying watches in a cooling market requires long-term bullishness. According to an experienced aftermarket watches collector, Danny Shahid, advised the 5 watches are worth buying and selling in a secondary market.
Rolex GMT Master II & Stainless Steel Rolex Submariner
The Rolex GMT Master II and the Stainless Steel Rolex Submariner are both recommended purchases because their values will increase over time. They have performed amazingly well over the past decade and will likely continue to do so, regardless of general market conditions. Considering the model's previous performance, both of the timepieces are relatively affordable in the luxury watch segment, offering a huge long-term opportunity with limited risk.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore
While the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore has languished in the shadows of its older sibling, its value has been disproportionately low over the last few years compared to the Royal Oak. As such, if it gets the recognition it deserves, the price could pay off quite impressively when the next watch market explodes.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas
Another timepiece that provides a great opportunity to buy is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas. Given the much higher value of the Patek Philippe Nautilus and AP Royal Oak, it's reasonable to assume it will catch up to a certain extent.
As the least popular of the three watches, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas is a sleeper option that most people don’t notice yet. This is a watch currently flying under the radar as an "if you know, you know" timepiece, so its potential upside is relatively high.
Rolex Submariner ref.126613
Most watches’ values will depreciate during the cooling-off period. It is those that don't have a positive long-term prospective that should be sold because they cater to trends that don't appear often.
Two-tone models like the Submariner ref. 126613 and GMT-Master II ref. 116713 are not nearly as popular as their stainless steel brethren and probably won’t become desirable again for a few decades. Hence, a piece of advice for all watch collectors: it would be better to sell the watch if you need the watch to be popular and the economy to be healthy both at once.
