Journey the world with Rolex Explorer

It should come as no surprise that Rolex has a history of exploration given that the company has dedicated an entire line of watches called "Explorer." Hans Wilsdorf, one of the two founding fathers of Rolex, habitually sent his timepieces into the great unknown of the early 20th century. He sees the world as a living laboratory, and it is his obligation to be a part of the greater community dedicated to journeying and exploring our world.

During the Houston Expedition's ascent of Mt. Everest in 1933, a Rolex watch was present as it flew over the icy summit. Two decades later, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first people to conquer and stand at the pinnacle of Mount Everest.

The expedition team had received prototype timepieces, and it is widely believed that Sir Edmund Hillary chose to wear a Smiths De Luxe while Norgay wore his Rolex to the top. The Oyster Perpetual "Bubbleback" model that was worn by the brave duo became the inspiration for the creation of the "Explorer," which was released in late 1953.

The Explorer has made its way onto the pages of fiction in addition to the globetrotting adventures of mountaineers. The watch was seen on the wrist of Ian Fleming, a renowned author for his books about the international spy, James Bond. It is speculated that the watch worn by Bond is also an "Explorer."

Speaking of British men, Edward Thomas Hardy or better known as Tom Hardy, is another well-known actor who travels between countries for his various films. During a promotional tour for his film Legend at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, the Rolex Explorer II ref. 216570 was seen on his wrist. Its large 42mm stainless steel case, white “Polar” dial, and bright orange accents make it one rugged Rolex sports watch that speaks volumes about the actor, who finds himself working worldwide.

The relationship between Rolex and Expedition has always been embodied by the Explorer models. As the ideal watch for travelers, it will continue to be synonymous with the adventuring spirit for both rugged explorers and charming actors alike.
